Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov
It is not for nothing that a university is named after him
So who is Prof. Paraskev Stoyanov and why was a medical university named after him - the Medical University of Varna?
Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov (Bulgarian: Параскев Стоянов; Romanian: Paraschiv Stoian) - January 30, 1871 - November 14, 1941, was a surgeon, anarchist, athlete, historian, entrepreneur, cluster expert and professor and he Considered one of the fathers of Bulgarian and Romanian anarchism.
Prof. Dr. Paraskev was the son of Ivancho Stoyanov, an active Bulgarian fighter for national liberation from Russia, and Gabriela von Walter, who immigrated from Germany. He was born on January 30, 1871 in the city of Georgiou in Romania, where Prof. D's father fled "R. Paraskev to escape the persecution of him by the Ottoman Empire. Belonging to a wealthy socio-economic environment, Paraskev Stoyanov enjoyed a solid education, he attended Saint Sava High School in Bucharest, Romania and continued his studies at medical universities in Romania, France and Switzerland.
After elementary school in Bucharest, he began to adhere to socialist ideas, and after high school he switched from socialism to anarchism. The transition from socialism to anarchism occurred after he read Peter Kropotkin's pamphlet "Appeal to the Young". Thus, in high school, he founded book clubs for students studying socialism and anarchism and began to spread anarchism among the workers in Romania. His activity led him to be considered the "father" of anarchism in the country.
Prof. Dr. Parascev translated into Romanian the many pamphlets of Errico Malatesta, including "For the Voters", "Between Peasants" and "Anarchy".And in 1890 he went to deepen his medical studies in Paris, and participated in an international conference of students and the publication of a libertarian manifesto with the Italian libertarian socialist Francesco Sabrio Marlino. The day he published the libertarian manifesto he was arrested, but he was released on bail a few months later.
He moved to Italy, then took refuge for a while in Switzerland, where he met the leading theoreticians of the anarchist movement: Peter Kropotkin and Elisa Reclus.
After completing his medical studies in Würzburg, Germany in 1895, he became a professor of surgery at the first Faculty of Medicine and Propediotics in Sofia, Bulgaria, and wrote his first textbooks on surgery.
In 1895, as a professor of medicine, Stoyanov climbed Mount Grand Combin, Switzerland, up to a height of 4318 m, and was greeted by Elko Konstantinov, who is considered the pioneer of Bulgarian alpinism. This is the first recorded ascent of a Bulgarian to an altitude exceeding 4000 m.
Stoyanov lived and worked in Varna between 1905 - 1918. There he founded the convalescent home for children with tuberculosis of the bones and joints which was the only one of its kind in the Balkan Peninsula. Originally, it was located in inadequate sheds in the "Carnitanata" area. In the sanatorium he founded, children from the age of 3 to 15 were accepted from all over Bulgaria, regardless of their social status. Of all the children in treatment, 95% either improved their condition or recovered completely. Prof. Dr. Stoyanov was recognized worldwide as one of the founders of thalassotherapy (seawater therapy) and heliotherapy (sun therapy). He constantly urged, "Bulgarians should turn to the sea and start using its values!".
Today, the founder of Bulgarian surgery - Professor Dr. Paraskev bears his name on one of the best medical universities in the world - the Medical University of Varna and the multi-profile hospital for active treatment in Lovch. There are also streets in Pomorie and Varna named after him.
